In Residence: Sun Ranch, Byron Bay

Inspired by the free-spirited Californian ranch houses of the 1970s, with influences drawn from Spanish and Mexican design, the property feels transportive without losing its connection to the landscape around it. Terracotta, recycled brick, rich timber, vintage furniture and unexpected colour come together across a collection of spaces designed as much for gathering as retreat.

At its heart is the Rambler Longhouse - home to four pool suites and some of the Ranch's most memorable communal spaces. The sunken lounge known as The Lair gathers guests around a sculptural fireplace, while nearby, the intimate Whiskey Lounge and richly toned Cowboy Bar carry the property's playful take on hospitality into the evening.

There is a sense of ritual woven throughout a stay here. Mornings begin with coffee and birdsong; afternoons might be spent beside the mineral pool, riding through the property or moving between the wood-fired sauna and ice bath. As the light changes, people return to the fire, the bar and the table.

It is within the Cowboy Bar that a Kyn & Folk ceramic water vessel has found its home.

Against terracotta tiles, dark stone and warm timber, the vessel sits quietly among the more expressive elements of the room - keeping filtered water within reach as guests move through the rhythms of Ranch life.

Water is considered more broadly across the property, too. Sun Ranch's approach includes extensive rainwater harvesting, solar power and regeneration of the former farmland, with more than 10,000 native trees and plants established across the estate.

Perhaps that is what makes Sun Ranch such a natural first home for In Residence: a place where design is expressive but everyday rituals remain considered; where objects are chosen not simply to be looked at, but to become part of how a space is lived in.
